Percent grade to degrees

Type a value in % to get it in ° instantly.

5.711°

That's about the same as a steep road sign. Over a kilometer on the map that climbs about 100 meters.

What it means

How steep is that?

Percent grade is rise over horizontal run. Road signs use the same definition, so a 10% hill climbs 10 m over 100 m of map distance, not of road.

The math

How to convert % to °

Grade and angle are linked by the tangent: grade % = tan(angle) × 100, and back again angle = arctan(grade ÷ 100). A 1 in N slope is simply 100 ÷ N percent.

Example: 10 % = 5.71059 °.
