FLOPS converter
Convert computer and GPU performance between FLOPS prefixes, and compare it with famous machines.
That's 62,500× as fast as a Cray-1 (1976), while a PlayStation 5 is 1.03× faster.
What it means
How fast a computer is that?
Peak 32-bit figures for chips, LINPACK 64-bit results for supercomputers; real programs reach a fraction of either.

Three things worth knowing
-
Each prefix is ×1,000
giga → tera → peta → exa: 1 TFLOPS is 1,000 GFLOPS, 1 EFLOPS is a million TFLOPS.
-
The TOP500 list
Since 1993 the TOP500 has ranked supercomputers twice a year by their LINPACK FLOPS.

Precision matters
AI chips quote FLOPS at 8 or 16 bits, many times higher than 64-bit figures. Compare like with like.

About FLOPS
FLOPS counts floating-point operations (multiplies and adds of decimal numbers) per second, the work of science, graphics and AI. A 1976 Cray-1 managed 160 megaFLOPS; a games console today does about 10 teraFLOPS, 60,000 times more.
In 2022 the Frontier supercomputer passed one exaFLOPS: 10¹⁸ operations a second.
