Three things worth knowing
-
Halve and drop the thousands
For a 40-hour week, the hourly rate is about half the salary in thousands: 60,000 a year ≈ 30 an hour (28.85).
-
Hours and wages
Wages were paid by the day or the piece until the 40-hour week spread in the 1930s and 1940s, which made the hourly rate the standard measure of pay.
-
Biweekly is not twice a month
Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, 26 times a year; semimonthly pay comes 24 times. The cheques differ by about 8 %.

About converting pay
A full-time US year is usually counted as 2,080 hours: 40 hours × 52 weeks. So an annual salary divided by 2,080 gives the hourly rate, and 50,000 a year is about 24 an hour.
With 37.5-hour weeks (common in the UK) the year has 1,950 hours, and the same salary is 25.64 an hour.
