Three things worth knowing
-
UK − 4 = US
A UK 10 is a US 6; add 28 to the UK size for EU. Australian sizes match the UK.
-
Vanity sizing
Sizes have drifted larger over the decades, so the same body usually wears a smaller number than it would have a generation ago. Labels that flatter sell better, and different shops can put three numbers on the same body.
-
US and UK are not the same
Same numbers, different sizes: a US 12 is a UK 16. Buying from abroad without converting is the commonest reason clothes arrive too big or too small.

About dress sizes
Every country numbers dresses its own way, but they all step by two numbers per size, so they line up with fixed offsets. A UK 12 is a US 8, an EU 40, a French 42 and an Italian 44.
Behind every number is a set of body measurements: each size adds about 4 cm to bust, waist and hip.
