That's 1.13× as much as a third, while a half is 1.33× bigger. Written as a fraction that is 3/8, or 37.5%.
What it means
How big is that?

Three things worth knowing
-
Divide the top by the bottom
3/8 means 3 ÷ 8, which is 0.375. Multiply by 100 for the percentage. That is the whole of it.
-
Why 64ths
Halving is the easiest division to do with a ruler or a folded sheet, so the inch was split in half again and again: halves, quarters, eighths, sixteenths, thirty-seconds, sixty-fourths.
-
Some decimals never end
1/3 is 0.3333… forever. Any fraction whose denominator has a factor other than 2 or 5 repeats, so a rounded decimal is never quite the same number.

About fractions and decimals
A fraction and a decimal are the same number written two ways: 3/8 = 0.375 = 37.5%. Going from a fraction to a decimal is one division. Going back is harder, which is what this page does for you: it finds the simplest fraction that matches, rather than something like 375/1000.
