Volume converter
Convert between milliliters, liters, cubic meters, teaspoons, cups, pints, quarts and gallons, then watch the liquid pour into a container you can picture.
That's about the same as a bucket. Filled with water, that would weigh about 10 kg.
What it means
How much is that?
Cups, pints, quarts and gallons here are US measures unless marked UK. UK pints and gallons are about 20% larger.

Three things worth knowing
-
A liter is a fist-sized cube
One liter is a cube 10 cm on each side, and it weighs almost exactly 1 kg as water. That link between volume and mass was the whole point of the metric system.
-
Why US and UK gallons differ
The US kept an old English wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, while Britain redefined its gallon in 1824 as ten pounds of water. That is why a UK gallon is 4.55 L and a US one 3.79 L.
-
Ounces of what?
A fluid ounce measures volume, an ounce measures weight, and they only match for water by coincidence. A US fluid ounce is also 4% larger than a UK one.

Background
About volume units
Volume is where the US and the rest of the world differ most confusingly. A liter is the same everywhere, but a gallon, pint or fluid ounce differs between the US and the UK.
The metric side is simple: 1 liter is 1,000 ml, a cube 10 cm on each side, and 1 cubic meter is 1,000 liters.
