Engine displacement converter
Convert engine sizes between cubic centimeters, liters and cubic inches, for cars, motorcycles and boats.
That's about the same as a 350 V8.
What it means
How big is that engine?
Swept volume of all cylinders. Makers round: a “5.7 L” 350 is 5,735 cc.

Three things worth knowing
-
61 cubic inches a liter
One liter is 61.02 ci: a 2.0 L engine is 122 ci, a 5.0 L is 305.
-
Taxed by size
Many countries taxed cars by displacement or bore, which is why Europe built small, high-revving engines while the US built big V8s.
-
cc is not horsepower
Displacement says how much air an engine can swallow, not its power: a turbo 1.5 L can outpull an old 3.0 L.

About displacement
Displacement is the volume all the pistons sweep in one turn: bore area × stroke × number of cylinders. Europe and Japan quote it in cc or liters; classic American V8s are known by cubic inches: the 302, 350, 454.
One cubic inch is 16.39 cc, so a 350 ci engine is 5.7 L.
