Decimal hours converter
Convert time from hours and minutes to decimal hours for a timesheet or payroll, or decimal hours back to h:mm.
That's 1.94× as long as half a workday, while a full shift is 1.03× longer. At 20 an hour, that time pays 155.
What it means
How long is that?
h:mm results are rounded to the nearest minute. A workday here is 8 hours; the pay example uses 20 per hour in any currency.

Three things worth knowing
-
Minutes ÷ 60
15 min = .25, 30 min = .5, 45 min = .75, 6 min = .1. So 7:45 is 7.75 hours.
-
Why sixty
Hours and minutes come from Babylonian base-60 arithmetic; money went decimal. Timesheets are where the two systems meet.
-
7.45 is not 7:45
Writing 7:45 as 7.45 hours underpays 18 minutes. And 8.2 hours is 8:12, not 8:20.

Background
About decimal hours
Clocks count in sixties but payroll counts in tens. To pay 7 hours 45 minutes at an hourly rate, the time has to become 7.75 hours: divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours.
Going back, multiply the decimal part by 60: 8.2 hours is 8 hours and 12 minutes, not 8:20. Some time clocks avoid the problem with industrial minutes, a hundredth of an hour each.
