Specific capacity converter
Convert battery specific capacity between mAh/g and the other units, and see the energy density behind it.
That's about the same as lithium iron phosphate. In a 3.7 volt cell that is about 629 Wh/kg.
What it means
How much charge is that?
These are active-material figures. A finished cell also carries binder, electrolyte, separator and casing, so its capacity is roughly half.

Three things worth knowing
-
1 mAh/g = 3.6 C/g
Because an hour is 3,600 seconds and a milliamp is a thousandth of an amp. A mAh/g is also exactly an Ah/kg.
-
Faraday set the ceiling
One mole of electrons carries 96,485 coulombs. Divide by the molar mass and you have the theoretical capacity — no chemistry can beat it.
-
Capacity is not energy
A high-capacity material at a low voltage can store less energy than a modest one at a high voltage. Energy is capacity times volts, and both matter.

About specific capacity
Specific capacity is charge per gram of active material, and it sets the ceiling on what a battery chemistry can do. Graphite stores 372 mAh/g, lithium iron phosphate 170, and pure lithium metal 3,860.
Multiply by the cell voltage and you have the energy density, which is what actually decides how far a car goes.
