Data rate converter
Convert between bits and bytes per second, from kbps to Gbps, and race your connection against dial-up, 4G and fiber.
That's 2× as fast as 4G mobile, while cable broadband is 2× faster. A 4 GB movie would take 5.333 minutes to download.
What it means
How fast is that connection?
Advertised speeds are maximums. Real transfers lose 10 to 20% to protocol overhead before anything else slows them down.

Three things worth knowing
-
Divide by 8
A 100 Mbps line downloads at about 12.5 MB/s at best. If your download manager shows roughly an eighth of the advertised number, everything is working properly.
-
Why connections are sold in bits
Telecoms have measured signalling in bits per second since the telegraph, long before the byte existed. Marketing kept the habit, partly because the number is eight times bigger.
-
Mbps is not MBps
One lowercase letter changes the answer eightfold. Mbps and Mb/s mean megabits; MBps and MB/s mean megabytes.

Background
About data rate units
Internet speeds are sold in bits per second, while files and download managers count bytes per second. There are 8 bits in a byte, so the same connection shows two numbers that differ by a factor of eight.
The capital letter is the only clue: Mb is megabits, MB is megabytes.
