Convert between pixels, points, picas and millimeters: the sizes behind every stylesheet, word processor and printed page.
That's 1.09× as big as body text, while a heading is 2× bigger. That is about 4.233 mm tall on paper.
What it means
How big is that?
A CSS pixel is defined as 1/96 inch, so 16 px is exactly 12 pt regardless of screen density.

Three things worth knowing
-
px × 0.75 = pt
The browser default of 16 px is 12 pt. Multiply pixels by three quarters for points, or divide points by 0.75 to go back.
-
The point came from lead type
Points measured the metal body a letter was cast on, not the letter itself. That is why two fonts at the same point size can look very different.
-
A CSS pixel is not a screen pixel
On a high-density phone one CSS pixel covers three device pixels. CSS pixels are a unit of length, which is what keeps text readable across screens.

About type units
Print works in points, 1/72 of an inch, and picas, 12 points each. The web works in CSS pixels, defined as 1/96 inch. That fixed ratio makes 16 px exactly 12 pt.
