Fabric weight converter
Convert fabric weight between GSM and ounces per square yard, the two numbers every cloth is sold by.
That's 1.2× as heavy as a summer T-shirt, while a hoodie is 1.56× heavier. A T-shirt made from it would weigh about 198 g.
What it means
How heavy is that cloth?
Weight describes the cloth, not the garment. A loose knit at 200 GSM feels quite different from a tight weave at the same weight.

Three things worth knowing
-
1 oz/yd² = 33.9 GSM
So the 14 oz denim everyone quotes is about 475 GSM. Divide GSM by 34 for a quick ounce figure.
-
Why denim is in ounces
American mills weighed a square yard of finished cloth, and the habit stuck. A pair of jeans is still described by an ounce figure nobody converts.
-
Momme is silk only
Silk is sold in mommes, an old Japanese weight. A 19 momme pillowcase is about 82 GSM, which sounds thin because silk is.

Background
About fabric weight
Cloth is sold by weight per area: GSM (grams per square meter) almost everywhere, ounces per square yard in the US and in denim. A 150 GSM T-shirt is light summer weight; 280 GSM is a solid hoodie; denim runs 300 to 450.
