convertimate Three-phase power (kVA to amps)

Three-phase kVA to amps converter

Pick the line voltage, then convert a three-phase load or transformer rating in kVA to the current in each line, or amps back to kVA.

144.3A

That's 3.3× as large as a small workshop, while an office building is 2.5× larger. At 400 V that draws 144.3 A in each line.

What it means

How large a load is that?

Balanced three-phase load, line-to-line voltage. For kW multiply kVA by the power factor; for single phase use the watts-to-amps converter.

Background

About three-phase power

Industrial supplies use three phases, each 120° apart. For a balanced load the apparent power is S = √3 × V × I, with V the line-to-line voltage. At 400 V, each kVA draws 1.44 A per line; at 480 V, 1.2 A.

Transformers and generators are rated in kVA because their heating depends on current, whatever the power factor.
