Fuel economy converter
Convert between miles per gallon, liters per 100 km and kilometers per liter, the three ways the world measures the same thing, and see how far one tank would take you.
That's 1.06× as economical as a family car, while a compact car is 1.33× better. On a 50-liter tank, that is about 637.7 km of range.
What it means
How far on one tank?
Range assumes a 50-liter tank. US and UK gallons differ, so always check which mpg a figure means.

Three things worth knowing
-
The 235 rule
Divide 235 by US mpg to get L/100 km, and the other way round too: 30 mpg is about 7.8 L/100 km. The number is 282 for UK gallons.
-
Why Europe counts backwards
Fuel per distance answers the question drivers actually ask: what will this trip cost? It also scales properly, because halving L/100 km really does halve the fuel bill.
-
mpg improvements mislead
Going from 10 to 15 mpg saves more fuel over the same distance than going from 30 to 50 mpg. Liters per 100 km makes that obvious; mpg hides it.

Background
About fuel economy units
Two opposite ideas share this page. Miles per gallon and km per liter measure distance from fuel: bigger is better. Liters per 100 km measures fuel for a distance: smaller is better.
Because they run in opposite directions, converting means dividing rather than multiplying, and equal steps in one are not equal steps in the other.
