Three things worth knowing
-
Four cups
400 mg is about four cups of brewed coffee, six espressos or eight cups of tea.
-
A plant’s pesticide
Coffee, tea and cacao plants make caffeine to deter insects. Friedlieb Runge first isolated it from coffee beans in 1819, at Goethe’s suggestion.
-
Espresso is not the strongest
Per sip espresso is concentrated, but a large mug of drip coffee usually holds more caffeine than a single shot.

About caffeine
An 8 oz (240 ml) cup of brewed coffee has about 95 mg of caffeine, a single espresso about 63 mg, a cup of black tea about 47 mg and a 12 oz can of cola about 34 mg.
Health agencies in Europe and the US consider up to 400 mg a day safe for most healthy adults; caffeine’s half-life is about five hours, so an afternoon coffee is still half there at bedtime.
